Katie Karlovitz
When you’re naturally shy as a child as I was, you learn how to negotiate the fearsome public early on.
My younger brother Mark was often pressed into service…”Please tell Santa that I would like a yellow sweater…” etc. Inside the family home I was lively and happy and outside I switched that off. This went on until I was cast as a frog in my school’s artful production of Alice in Wonderland. I was 13, had hit on a way out of my shyness, and that was what I knew I wanted to do when I grew up.
This is a screen-grab from Stephen King’s film, Creepshow. I had a bit part in it, and then worked professionally as an actor for many years. The training I was lucky to receive at Carnegie Mellon University has stood me in good stead. Everyone should have the experience at least once of being onstage-there’s just nothing else like it.
What I learned from my acting/directing career is that preparation is key to getting excellent results. And frankly, most people get no help when trying to prepare on their own. This is good, because I get tremendous satisfaction in guiding other people to the stage or camera.
My days on stage are long over and to be able to pass along my classical training to contemporary presenters is forever a win/win/win…for the speaker, the audience and me.
